The First Yanmar Engines
The inspiration behind the first Yanmar engines was to make work easier for farmers and laborers through reliable, compact, and efficient engines. This resulted in a three-horsepower vertical oil-powered engine, followed by a horizontal oil-powered engine. As usage and word spread about Yanmar’s engines, the response was overwhelming.
With demand high, the company continued to innovate, working to create an even smaller, more effective diesel engine. In 1933, there was a breakthrough when the prototype of this design was successfully tested after many iterations. The resulting product was called the HB Model.

At the core of every tractor is the liquid-cooled diesel engine. Our sub-compact tractors such as the SA Series are equipped with a 3-cylinder engine, while larger tractors like the YT3 Series are equipped with a 4-cylinder engine.
No matter which engine you’re operating, our innovative fuel-injection systems and combustion chambers create an outstanding level of power to help tackle the toughest jobs. i-HMT Transmission
One of the most critical components that sets the Yanmar engine apart is the integrated Hydro Mechanical Transmission (i-HMT). This versatile feature comes with numerous benefits to the operator, such as:
- Step-less and clutch-less shifting from zero to maximum speed
- Ability to control ground speed and engine speed with AB mode
- Auto throttle to control engine and travel speed with accelerator/drive pedal
- Brake and stop the tractor without engaging the clutch
- Conversion of horsepower into PTO horsepower and drawbar horsepower
- Anti-stall capabilities
